Melinda Schawel’s art practice explores the qualities of paper itself, using the medium to convey personal and emotional responses to phenomena occurring in nature. ‘Silver Lining’ is inspired by a recent trip to the Whitsundays where the devastation caused by Cyclone Debbie contrasted against the vibrant re-growth of the coral. Melinda has always been drawn to the physicality of the creative process; she tears, peels and perforates the paper that she paints on creating interplays between colour and form to reveal her landscape inspired imagery. Melinda’s work is represented in numerous collections including the National Gallery of Australia, Artbank, Geelong Regional Gallery and Royal Museum of Fine Art (Antwerp, Belgium).
