Minyma Mayatja – Boss Women celebrates two revered indigenous senior women artists;
Nyarapayi Giles, 80 years of age and Katjarra Butler 71 years of age.
Painting companions for some years, these two women work side by side at the Tjarlirli art centre in the tiny picturesque, but remote far western community of Tjukurla deep in the Ngaanyatjarra Lands on the WA/NT border.
Both Nyarapayi and Katjarra have had their work described in the media as joyous, sheer dynamism, awe inspiring and grand.
This is their first exhibition together. The outcome is extraordinary.
Each painting a channel for the power of indigenous desert religion.
New and old together, in an embrace as strong as the juxtaposed colours and compositions of their art.
Both Nyarapayi Giles and Katjarra Butler are represented in several major public collections including the National Gallery of Australia, the National Gallery of Victoria, Art Gallery of Western Australia, QAGOMA, Corrigan Collection
